Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 09/21/2020

Number: 13

13 cats, eight are definitely @ 5th instar, 2 look like 4th instar to me, one @ 3rd instar, two @ 2nd.

This autumn I've held firm and not taken any eggs or caterpillars into tents, but rather let nature mostly take is course. I did relocate 4 of the now 5th instar caterpillars from the field to backyard milkweed. Most of the rest I hadn't even noticed til this morning!

I think that at least the big ones will eclose in time for peak migration, but it's cooler than usual in OKC for this time of year including a tie for record low during the crazy cold snap on 9/9

Not more than 3 butterflies hung around from the early August batch of Monarch eggs.

The 6 cats in the field are munching on either common milkweed or swamp milkweed. Tropical milkweed in pots by house are hosting the other seven.
