Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/21/2020

Number: 20

Sightings were at Chisholm Creek Park in Wichita, KS. Great Plains Nature Center Naturalists and volunteers captured, tagged and released 20 adult Monarchs this afternoon.

The Monarchs were all wild. All of the Monarchs were found resting or flitting around in a grove trees of various kinds of trees. It was midday, noon to 2PM, warm and mostly sunny.

We released seven in the grove of trees where we captured them and all of those flew upwards into the tree canopy and possibly through it.

We took 13 in two of what I am calling "Butterfly carriers" back to the Nature Center, about a third of a mile away, so that other Naturalists, volunteers and visitors could watch them being tagged and released.

The winds were fairly light that day. All but two or three of those thirteen rose up over the Nature Center building and flew south. A few of them started back north into the Park area.
