Number: 1

While releasing my female captive-reared monarch, I saw this monarch intently fueling up on a New England Purple Aster.

It was a gorgeous day. And at 11 AM it was 70 degree F. and the sky was a brilliant blue and clouds were white and friendly.

The strong breeze kept the plants swaying and the monarch wings closed. I was not able to get this monarch's gender.

I scanned the rest of this 10 to 15 acre field of golden rod and asters for other monarchs but saw none. That does not mean there were no other monarchs fueling up, however, this is a very large field. It was last farmed around 40 years ago and has been a field of golden rod, asters, common milkweed and other sun-loving plants since then.

I have had many a rewarding time looking for monarchs and other butterflies in this rural field across the road from my home.
