Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/30/2020

Number: 5

Today was interesting with the weather. It rained all night and this morning until it stopped at 2 PM. The sun came out with some dark clouds still hanging around when I observed a monarch flying across my flower garden in the backyard with the Temperature at 56F. It flew south over the tree line at 2:07 PM. At 2:20 PM, my wife and I went to the Post Office in town by car where we saw a female monarch at 2:55 PM. It was nearly red with it's wings wide open in the bright sunlight nectaring on a knapweed flower on the lawn at the 3rd Street walkway. We then went to the harbor and observed a monarch flying across the field heading SW at 3 PM. We went home where I decided to walk to Harrisville State Park along the Lake Huron shoreline at 3:30 PM, and saw 2 monarchs within a couple of minutes of each other heading west. At 4 PM, it began to rain, so I walked home where the rain had stopped. At 5 PM, the sun came out with bright white clouds, and snow flurries came down until 5:22 PM! No more monarchs were observed to 6:30 PM. The high Temperature topped out at 60F. NOTE: This September's monarch count was 590. Last year it was 3,892! As I enter the October count, the monarchs are down by 76% from last year.
