Monarch, Captive-Reared
Sightings report image

Date: 10/31/2020

Number: 1

A 5th instar caterpillar was found at this site on Sept 26 and moved into a netted enclosure. It took its time making a chrysalis and even longer to emerge. It emerged October 23. Because it was lousy cold, the cage had been brought indoors and there Mathilda the Monarch stayed until Saturday October 31. That day she was released when the temperature reached into the 60s. She flew south despite a strong wind. The next day was too cold to fly and also Monday. If she found a protected spot with some remaining thistles and asters for nectar and survived, then today Tuesday election day it's 70 degrees and will be warm all week and she can get to Texas and beyond. Good luck! The photo is her eating just before release.
