I live in Venice, Florida and my butterfly garden has been active with 2-4 monarch females all winter, laying eggs and resulting larvae. By Jan 1, 2021, I was only seeing (1) female at a time throughout the day, actively laying eggs. My in-ground 20+ milkweed (tropical) were totally wiped out and I cut them back, but not before purchasing (2) giant milkweed and (6)tropical. Since Jan 1, the numbers of cats have greatly dwindled but there have always been 2-3 happily munching. I would check every morning and they lived through nights in high 40s. Most times when I counted there would be 3-4 fewer than my last count. I thought it was predators! I have 4 chrysalises hanging but they have been there for 3 weeks and are now turning black. I have released over 100 from captivity and I know these are dead. Yesterday, there was a lone male flying around. He ignored my healthy milkweed, but landed in my crotons. Took his picture to send you before he left in search of a female.
