Signs of Spring

Date: 02/17/2021

Number: 1

The sun came out, though it was still very cold. Still, the length of day seemed to stimulate some serious hormones: house finches were in large flocks all chattering and making small song all day long. The titmice are really vocal and displaying most of their repertoire with lots of calls and movement tree to tree. Chickadees are singing, and even the cardinals are singing. The blue jays are already beginning mating rituals of flocks of males chasing a female, complete with all the one-upsmanship on the branches when she pauses in a tree, all the aggression calls, etc..., with a few successful challengers following off after her when she darts off to the next tree, leaving some failed upstarts to look for a new female to impress. It all seemed to happen on this one day. Even the starlings are vocalizing more constantly.
