I have never seen this before nor so early and in the middle of a cold snap. I was shocked when I realized they were robins. They not only gathered in the Pine trees next door at the park and covered the ground, they came around the lakeside of my condo the next day and were in the weeping willow tree. My neighbor commented she had seen a couple a few days prior.
