Number: 10

At about 11:45am I looked out the window and saw 2 monarchs flying around the wildflowers in our backyard.

At 12:30 - 1:30pm I was able to go out and look around. It was 60 degrees F, sunny, breezy with NW winds, and 50% humidity. I saw at least 10 individual monarchs. Most seemed to be female as they were actively looking for milkweed and egg-laying. There was also a lot of resting/sunning happening because of the chilly day.

As I walked down on our grassy path I saw a monarch fluttering towards me. I stood still and she ended up landing a few feet in front of me, spreading her wings to absorb the warm sun rays. As we both paused, I too was enjoying that warm sunlight!

One female I was observing caused me worry as she seemed to be laying eggs on grass that was not milkweed. Well...once she had gone off and I was able to look more closely I realized she was just way better at this than myself. She had simply found very small, tender shoots of green milkweed (hidden in the green grass) to lay her eggs on ~~ in multiple spots.

At 3:00pm I again went around and saw the same number of monarchs. Temp 63 F degrees, sunny, NW wind gusting 11mph, 47% humidity. They were still fluttering around looking for milkweed, flying, sometimes briefly nectaring on wildflowers, and resting/sunbathing. One female was checking milkweed closely and noting that eggs were already laid there, just moved on. This I observed multiple times.

At 4:00pm it was still 63 degrees F, sunny, 48% humidity, chilly and windy. I saw a monarch nectaring on Lyre-leaf sage in our backyard (now emerging in good numbers). Some monarchs still flying around and lots of sunbathing (as I walked I sometimes unfortunately startled monarchs resting/sunning in the grass). Saw a male monarch spot a female and take after her. She eluded him twice flying upwards (a bit of an air tussle). She came down & rested in a sunny location next to some woods.

This is a photo of one of the lovely female monarchs sunbathing ~ very needed on this chilly day. The males were sunbathing too!
