Sightings report image

Number: 10

We have been having nights in the low 40's and days in the 60's for several days, which may be affecting the emergence of milkweed. There are still some milkweed patches that have just now begun to show sprouts. I do continue to find more eggs on emerging milkweed.

Today at 1:00pm it was 65 degrees F, sunny, a light N breeze, and 45% humidity. I saw at least 7 individual monarchs. They were variously nectaring, fluttering low looking for milkweed, flying, sunbathing, and a male chasing a female in an aerial tussle (she wasn't caught).

One of the females I followed a bit had very faded wings and was quite diligently looking for milkweed. I really feel bad when I know it isn't yet up in the areas they are looking ~ at least to my eyes.

After errands, I went back out walking at 5:00pm and again later. I saw some flying monarchs and 2 faded-winged monarchs nectaring on false garlic flowers in our front yard & sunning.

It was a cool first day of spring and wonderful to have monarchs near. Our first yellow thistle finally bloomed and was quickly noticed as a nectar source. The photo is of a male monarch really enjoying the plenteous nectar that one blooming thistle can provide.
