Sightings report image

Date: 03/21/2021

Number: 10

I continued to see at least 10+ individual monarchs today, but hard to keep track as they fly in and out of the woodland areas and over and across nearby fields. It warmed up nicely, at one point reaching 70 degrees F. It was sunny, still to lightly breezy, and around 50% humidity ~~ pretty perfect for monarchs.

I continued to see monarchs flying around, fluttering low looking for milkweed, nectaring, and sunbathing. The nectar plants they most prefer are the false garlic flowers, the newly emerged Lyre-leaf sage, wild blackberry blossoms, and the one yellow thistle currently blooming (many more around, but they are taking forever to open up).

I saw one of the female monarchs laying eggs on what I think (?) is Whorled Milkweed (Asclepias verticillata). This is a plant that is very uncommon for us, though I have seen monarchs nectar from its flowers when in bloom. Regarding this mystery milkweed, I am going to add a report and photo to Monarch (Other Observations).

This is a photo of a lovely female monarch enjoying the nutritious nectar of the yellow thistle ~ quite coated in pollen!
