Monarch Egg Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 03/23/2021

Number: 294

Yesterday and today I did a survey of the milkweed in our pastures checking for monarch eggs and larvae. I looked at a total of 248 individual milkweed plants (Asclepias viridis). On these plants I observed 294 monarch eggs and 2 monarch larvae (both newborn today on the same milkweed).

The specific numbers are as follows:

96 milkweed w/0 eggs
65 milkweed w/1 egg
56 milkweed w/2 eggs
17 milkweed w/3 eggs
8 milkweed w/4 eggs
4 milkweed w/5 eggs
1 milkweed w/6 eggs
0 milkweed w/7 eggs
1 milkweed w/8 eggs

1st instar larvae = 2

A lot of the milkweed is still very small having just emerged recently. I did not cover all the sections where milkweed is growing due to my time limitations, but this may give a general idea of what is happening in this location.
