Sightings report image

Date: 03/26/2021

Number: 10

I was away from home today most of the day, but before I left I saw monarchs flying around & again when I got back home at 4pm. At that time is was 84 degrees F, sunny, breezy, and 34% humidity.

The first thing I noticed when I got home was a mating pair on a yellow thistle (right in front of our driveway). I am going to add that report to Monarch (Other observations). I had observed males chasing females before I left & pretty quickly I saw another aerial chase after I arrived back home. It was impressive how the female spiraled upwards and then dived straight to earth only to pull up at the last moment, again spiraling upwards -- I counted 5 of these up-downs maneuvers -- amazingly fast and the male in hot pursuit. When the escape is made, everybody goes back to whatever they were doing before, such as nectaring or looking for milkweed.

I followed two different females as they fluttered around, diligently seeking milkweed, and thankfully finding it too. I saw some monarchs resting at times, one female on grapevine leaves. The monarchs also were nectaring on wildflowers and generally sailing around.

This is a photo of one of the lovely female monarchs as she lays an egg on a milkweed in the late afternoon sunlight.
