Milkweed Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 03/29/2021

Number: 1

Zip code 78739 Monarch waystation in SW Austin. Antelope horn milkweed in front yard. Probably four years old established by direct sewing. Measurements range from 2 inch sprigs up to 8 inches. No signs of eggs or monarchs in yard though I saw 2 orange butterflies in this zip code in the past week that could have been monarchs.

Texas had a big freeze in February that broke records but has been very dry. This may be the biggest issue for spring milkweed.

We also have very few native nectar plants in bloom now other than wildflowers like bluebonnets, weeds like dandelions, or those that were in containers during the freeze and brought in.
