I went around at 11:33am for about 45 minutes. I did not see any monarchs. It was 62 degrees F, cloudy, breezy NE winds gusting at times, with 45% humidity ~ it felt chilly. At 12:30pm it started to sprinkle rain.
At 3:00pm I went out for about 10 minutes walking around our yard. It was 63 degrees F, cloudy, light NE wind, 41% humidity. I saw 2 monarchs flitting around & both nectared from the yellow thistles.
At 4:20-4:50 I went around and saw at least 12 individual monarchs. It was 67 degrees F, cloudy but with some sun, breezy NE wind, 34% humidity. I observed monarchs flying around & nectaring on yellow thistles, also the pink (purple?) thistle that is now open, and wild blackberry blossoms. They also sometimes were resting/warming with wings outspread. I followed one of the females laying eggs in our upper pasture ~ at times she too rested/sunbathed & nectared from blackberry blossoms.
At 5:15pm I went walking around for about 20 minutes. I saw a female monarch fluttering low looking for milkweed in our backyard. As I went down into the pastures checking on some of the milkweed, I saw several low-flying monarchs sailing around ~ likely males.
This is a photo of one of the male monarchs nectaring from the newly opened pink thistle ~ with a bee seen in the background. Lots of bumblebees around!
