Vaccinium corymbosum, the Starberry bush.
The Native Americans who lived the north east cultivated this bush for thousands of years. It is believed that the Great Spirit sent this berry bush from the stars to feed us and keep us healthy. The Great Spirt marked the bottom of each berry with a star so that we would never forget where it from.
Some may know this bush as the Northern Highbush Blueberry... it grows “wild” here in North Scituate. In the spring it is one of the very first to show budding leaves.
