Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 04/01/2021

Number: 1

A pair of Ruby Throated Hummingbirds returned to our home on 4/1/21. Sometimes the first arrivals go away after a while, but this pair have stayed the course. They've found their feeders under the front porch (1) and on the open patio (1). They prefer the shady feeder. Yesterday afternoon, I was sprinkling / watering the recently-frozen "plants" in the patio, when the lady Hummy flew up and rested on a dry branch near the sprinkling water. She relished the mist and flew away after a short while. She returned to the feeder and took a couple of sips, then she flew away. She's so petite! Then, the Big Ruby Throated Guy came and fed several sips from the same feeder. He was facing the sun, and I was just about a foot or two away, still sprinkling. He had no fear, either. As the sun shone on him, his regal ruby throat sparkled in the light. He's so handsome! When he finished feeding, he flew to the Lady, and they both zoomed away. Today they chattered by me in the front yard. How wonderful to have the Hummies back after such a weird spring season!
