I observed a monarch butterfly earlier this month it was in bad shape flying close to the ground .It was laying eggs on NON MILKWEED plants contrary to popular belief. I marked the plants where it had laid its eggs. I believe that a monarch butterfly will lay eggs on NON MILKWEED plants when there are no milkweed plants available.
So this year many monarchs migrating from Mexico were in such a situation. Today I found one caterpillar in it's 2nd instar on one of the plants I'd marked - it was not a milkweed plant! This is probably a survival mechanism.
So therefore the statement that monarchs only lay their eggs on milkweed plants is FALSE.
