This Easter Sunday was a lovely day with plenty of monarchs floating, fluttering, and sailing around. At 2:10pm it was 70 degrees F, mostly cloudy, soft breezes, and 61% humidity. I observed females seeking milkweed and laying eggs. I saw males chase females a few times (spiraling up into the sky and trees). The monarchs nectared from yellow and purple thistles, Lyre-leaf sage, wild blackberry blossoms, and flowering milkweed. I also observed monarchs resting/sunning.
This is a photo of a beautiful elder monarch who carefully laid eggs in a good patch of milkweed. She rested with wings outspread at times. She seemed like a wise mother as she peacefully spent a lot of time near milkweed with multiple monarch caterpillars ~ including 4th instars (the oldest I have found at our place). It was a blessing to see her.
