Sightings report image

Date: 04/10/2021

Number: 25

This was a bright, sunny day that started in the 60's and warmed into the 70's in the afternoon. It was very windy most of the day, with a north wind gusting at 15mph. The monarchs were flying, sailing, fluttering, and tacking straight into the strong winds at times. I saw a lot of females (at least 12 at one time). They were nectaring, resting/sunning, looking for milkweed, and laying eggs.

Today I saw a monarch that looked like a newborn to me. He had very bright wings that were fresh and velvety. He did a lot of nectaring and resting/sunning ~ sitting on milkweed buds.

Most of the monarchs I saw today looked like the usual elders, with worn, thin, or tattery wings ~ a few with brighter wings. There were at least 25+ individuals.

This is a photo of the bright-winged monarch nectaring from Lyre-leaf sage. It was really lovely to see this young fellow!
