Signs of Spring

Date: 04/27/2021

Number: 1

A male swallowtail emerged from its chrysalis after 8 or 9 months. It survived zero degree temps and 2 feet of snow. I only discovered the chrysalis today when I spotted the well-hidden, empty shell anchored under coping on a stucco wall a couple of feet from the swallowtail that was warming itself in this morning's sun.

I have about two dozen swallowtail chrysalides in an outside hamper that hopefully will also yield butterflies.
