Monarch Egg Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 04/22/2021

Number: 98

Today I did a survey of some the milkweed in our yard and pastures to check for monarch eggs & larvae. I focused on milkweed that I knew had either eggs or larvae or both. It was mostly cloudy, breezy, and reached a high of 70 degrees F. I looked closely at 115 individual milkweed plants and found 98 eggs and 47 larvae.

These are the monarch egg count results:

41 milkweed w/0 eggs
56 milkweed w/1 egg
12 milkweed w/2 eggs
6 milkweed w/3 eggs

These are the monarch larvae count results:

1st instars: 14
2nd instars: 10
3rd instars: 6
4th instars: 11
5th instars: 6

Note: Some of the milkweed plants had both eggs and larvae & some milkweed plants had multiple larvae.

It was wonderful to see the caterpillars as they rested or munched. There seemed to be a good number of eggs ~ mostly laid singly or just a few on individual milkweeds.
This is a photo of one of the eggs on the leaf of a fresh milkweed.
