When I went around in the late afternoon, I saw two monarchs flying & nectaring from Prairie Plantains, which are beginning to bloom. The other monarch I saw was a frail female with tattery wings resting in the grass near a large milkweed plant ~ which has eggs on it.
Today our first indoor-reared monarch was born. He was brought in as 5th instar larvae on April 11 and formed a chrysalis on April 13. He was one of the first 5th instars I had found here. It was good to see him born as a healthy, vibrant butterfly!
I continue to see monarch eggs on the milkweed (Asclepias viridis), which is abundant. I also saw newborns through 5th instars today.
This is a photo of one of the male monarchs nectaring on the tiny blossoms of a Prairie Plantain this afternoon.
