My girl is Back!
I’ve had my feeder up since the end of March and blooming flowers almost as long I was sure the nectar was being depleted last month But it wasn’t until May1st that I finally was in the right place at the right time to see a thin but gleaming female make use of the feeder She came back about every 20 minutes for the 5 hours that I could observe and in between headed off to a patch of Japanese Honeysuckle that’s taken over a neighbor’s back corner There are great nesting sites over there
Better yet I am confident she’s a return Because when I went out to move the feeder for a better view she acted as excited to greet me as I am to welcome her back to her Summer home!! She appeared inches from my face chittering expressively and hovered over me for most of an hour!
There’s 1 lone Carpenter Bee hole that I haven’t yet succeeded in coaxing the residents to move out of to lay in the bee house instead A couple of those bees have claimed half my deck They tried to bully her away like they have the Paper Wasps But she wasn’t having it :D I like to think the "conversion" we had after their dive bombing runs was mutual I did tell her I was working to relocate them and seal up that one last nest She’d probably noticed the reduction from last year’s numbers without me pointing my progress out
