1259, 48°F, First observed hummer of the season, male, flew in and hovered inches from my hand (which was on the feeder adjusting its position) for a few seconds before flying away. He returned about ten minutes later and fed briefly without landing; has been back since about every forty-five minutes, sometimes perching and nectaring from the feeder and admiring reflections. Photo was taken approximately ninety minutes after first observation. (Hummer does not seem quite as comfortable with this metallic feeder as with the ones with elastomeric flowers.) Unless his wonky leg has healed, this does not appear to be the same dominant resident male from last season ("Short-leg").
*Thought one hummer was seen flying through the yard on Monday, May 3rd, but dismissed it as possibly a big bug. First put out feeder yesterday on May 5th, took it in as overnight temp dipped near freezing, and put out this morning about an hour after sunrise. First observation last season was on May 15th.
