we returned to northern Virginia too late in the season to witness first emergence of tropical or common milkweed. presently both species are still growing taller with leaves only partially expanded. typical height is 3 to 14 inches for tropical milkweed and 1 to 8 inches for common milkweed. trail maintenance has already mowed trail edges, so milkweed growth may be more attractive to any monarchs than during summer 2020 when the trail edges were mowed just days before the first monarchs arrived here.
