Monarch, Captive-Reared

Date: 06/02/2021

Number: 2

Freshly egressed from cocoons in AM. Had been adopted by neighbor boys to raise inside net cage. After several hours, boys brought cage back to my butterfly garden and their original milkweed host plants. Opened cage immediately drew out huge, bright butterfly who flew immediately up into top of nearby Amur maple. Second big bright butterfly was a male (we didn’t think to check gender of first)). Climbed over to opening of cage and took off up, higher and ended up at top of nearby mulberry tree.
These two are the only adults seen from that early batch of tiny caterpillars...I did see one, much larger caterpillar ( maybe stage 4?) on the milkweed but only a one day sighting. The garden is dense this year so I could have missed them. But the Common milkweed plants show no signs of being eaten. It has been 20 degrees below normal, overcast and wet for weeks in So Central Ks.
