I was surprised to see that a Monarch female succeeded in laying a few eggs before getting nailed by a Mississippi Kite and I'm sure that's why I'm seeing so few (if any) Monarchs--Kites have been ardently patrolling the skies high and low looking for something to eat because there's not many of other insects out there either, and the cicadas aren't out yet. There should have been much more monarch activity here already by now.
