My wife and I were driving north on route 445 from Madisonburg.
Numerous common milkweeds are growing and blooming on both sides of the road along various stretches. So it wasn't entirely surprising while descending the ridge north of Madisonburg, rolling toward route 64, that we were passed by a Monarch butterfly headed in the opposite direction. The encounter lasted no more than about five seconds, but it was enough to be certain it was a Monarch butterfly that we glimpsed. This was at about 3:10 PM, under mostly overcast skies and an air temperature of about 64ºF.
