Practice Report (Any Species)

Date: 07/17/2021

Number: 2

Three days ago I reported stopping by a Wildlife Restoration area along Shiloh Road for the first time this year looking for evidence of Monarchs.   While I did briefly glimspe Monarch butterflies in flight, I did not manage to get any photographic evidence.

But when I stopped by the same spot today, I got a bit luckier.

During the ten minutes I spent observing (i.e., 3:10-3:20PM) I did get several glimpses of Monarch butterflies briefly in flight; often at a distance.   There’s no way of knowing how many of these were separate individuals and how many were repeats.   But I do know I saw at least two different Monarchs because they were both visible at the same time.

I also got one photo in which a Monarch butterfly is sort of visible nectaring on a pink thistle.   (The camera in my old TracFone is clearly not of the best quality.)

At the time the sky was overcast with a breeze blowing from the southwest at about 7 mph.   Other weather conditions included:

  • Temperature:
  • 81°F

  • Dewpoint:
  • 72°F

  • Humidity:
  • 74%
