Three days ago I reported stopping by a Wildlife Restoration area along Shiloh Road for the first time this year looking for evidence of Monarchs. While I did briefly glimpse Monarch butterflies in flight, I did not manage to get any photographic evidence.
But when I stopped by the same spot today, I got a bit luckier.
During the ten minutes I spent observing (i.e., 3:10-3:20PM) I did get several glimpses of Monarch butterflies briefly in flight; often at a distance. There’s no way of knowing how many of these were separate individuals and how many were repeats. But I do know I saw at least two different Monarchs because they were both visible at the same time.
I also got one photo in which a Monarch butterfly is sort of visible nectaring on a pink thistle. (The camera in my old TracFone is clearly not of the best quality.)
At the time the sky was overcast with a breeze blowing from the southwest at about 7 mph. Other weather conditions included:
