sunny, hot afternoon at Maxwell NWR. below the dam at Lake 13, many milkweeds growing. walking for about 45 minutes in and around patches of A. speciosa and A. subverticillata I scared up a bunch of monarchs. hard to count, but I estimate 15 individuals that ranged widely through the habitat. condition ranging from excellent to poor; clearly they were breeding here. most resisted photos, but I finally found one that was hot enough to seek refuge under a subverticillata inflorescence.
