Monarch, Captive-Reared

Date: 07/28/2021

Number: 150

I have captive reared and released over 100 monarchs so far this year. These were from eggs collected solely on my own property of 11 acres on Big Bald Lake which is one of the lakes on the Trent Severn Waterway system. So far I have at least 50 additional eggs and caterpillars. The collection is without even really trying to find them.
They just SHOW UP on the milkweed I collect from my own property for the feeding of the captive reared ones. This is my 3rd year. In this area, the presence of monarchs this year is amazing compared to the 2 prior years. I see them every single day in my outdoor butterfly habitat even when the weather is not the greatest. This is following the extremely severe gypsy moth infestation in this area which has just levelled off for the season. This year people in my area are all noticing a LOT more Monarchs than we usually see. It's been busy and encouraging. (My rearing success rate is almost 100%.)
