Monarch, Captive-Reared

Date: 07/28/2021

Number: 100

Since July 18th, I have gathered in protective custody, over 100 Monarch eggs and larvae. As of today, one caterpillar is ready to pupate. I feed the larvae fresh milkweed leaves daily. I keep them on natural light cycles. Otherwise, when examining my milkweed patch by my house, I do see evidence of small Monarch caterpillars by the holes in the leaves, but almost always, there are no larvae left. I feel that the newly hatched larvae are very vulnerable to being eaten by predators such as spiders. And currently there aren't enough Monarchs to lay enough eggs to overcome their natural predators.
