Milkweed Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 07/11/2021

Number: 1

Over the past several years we've managed to add a few varieties of milkweeds to our home gardens.   This year what's returned is swamp milkweed, a white flowering milkweed, butterfly weed, and common milkweed (clockwise from the upper-left corner in the included photo).   The second one we're uncertain of as we never had a white milkweed like that before.   What is most puzzling is that it “returned” where a pink swamp milkweed was last year.

Some of our common milkweeds have already flowered and are forming seed pods.   The other three types are all in full bloom (as of 7/11/2021), as you can see in the photo.

What has not (as yet) returned are any Monarch butterflies, and there has been no evidence that they've visited (i.e., no eggs, no caterpillars, no chewed leaves, not even any caterpillar poop).

We are hoping they will start visiting and enjoying our milkweeds soon.
