Monarch, Captive-Reared
Sightings report image

Date: 07/30/2021

Number: 5

Five monarchs emerged on 7/30 and were released. At this point, we have harvested 64 caterpillars from the milkweed patches that I planted. Twelve are in chrysalis stage, and 47 are still in caterpillar stage. We check the milkweed patches every day, which is about 150 plants. The external environment is not conducive to raising monarchs, due to surrounding farms and railroads. I used to be on the flyway, with 100's of monarchs. In the past 5 years, the number of monarchs had dropped to 4 or 5 butterflies.
