Monarch Blitz #4. (Donna Barski)

I watched at least 3 adult monarchs in a very large field across the road from where I live. I visited the field around 1:30PM. It was sunny and 68 degrees F.

The monarchs were very active and flitting about a large patch of purple iron weed flowers, landing frequently on the flower heads to sip nectar. It was difficult to photograph them with their wings open. Finally, I was able to ID the gender of two of the adults. There was one female and one male, both had wings with vibrant orange and black colors.

One of the monarchs sported very faded colors, so I suspect it was an older generation monarch.

I took many classic photos of the monarchs perched, wings closed, while they sipped nectar. However, because they were so actively searching out flower heads, I elected to submit this photo of a monarch leaving one flower head to find another.
