Practice Report (Any Species)

Date: 08/05/2021

Number: 1

In the past I have made mention (see for example my report of 7/17/2021) of a Wildlife Restoration area along Shiloh Road in which we have seen Monarch butterflies.

I stoppped by briefly this afternoon (i.e., 3:55 - 4:00 PM) and in the course of those five minutes I spotted at least six Monarch butterflies flitting about.   I say “at least” because they often are visible for only a few seconds as they rise above and then drop back down out of sight among the various plants.   It is therefore often difficult to know if what you have spotted is the same butterfly you saw earlier or a different one.   Today, the first two were a few seconds apart and in very different areas of the field (i.e., one to the north and the other to the southeast.   This was followed by a group of three that appeared together between those first two spots.   The sixth was toward the south. After that it was imposible to know who might be new and who had already been counted.   That, and the fact that it was hot standing out in the sun, resulted in my departure after only five minutes.

I did not have a camera with me, so no photos today.

At the time the sky was partly cloudy with a six mile per hour breeze coming from the WSW.   Other weather conditions included:

  • Temperature:
  • 82°F

  • Dewpoint:
  • 59°F

  • Humidity:
