Monarch, Captive-Reared

Date: 08/10/2021

Number: 212

25 eggs, 142 caterpillars, 38 chrysalis, 7 butterflies - 6 male, 1 female. some eggs were newly found in the garden. numbers are estimates, it's hard to keep track. all being kept in an outdoor enclosure to prevent against predation. the butterflies were released into the wild

also, i had an alarming die-off of caterpillars today (almost 20 in 24 hours), all 3rd-5th instar. they're falling off the plants and liquefying really fast. i've been doing this a few years now and always end up losing a few but i've never seen anything like this. the weather has been very hot and humid but i don't know if that makes a difference
