Number: 1

At 12:30pm I saw a beautiful female monarch nectaring and laying eggs on milkweed plants. She nectared on flowering slim milkweed (Asclepia linearis) near our driveway & also laid eggs on multiple milkweed plants (Asclepias viridis). We have abundant Asclepias viridis growing at this time, but it is rare to find Asclepias linearis. I watched as she lay single eggs on 10+ milkweed plants. She seemed healthy and made quick work with her egg-laying.

I also looked at some more areas of milkweeds. I found more monarch eggs and a few monarch larvae (newborn to 4th instar). I had not been checking the pastures or really looking for monarchs ~ as they are not usually here at this time of year.

This is a photo of this lovely monarch nectaring from the tiny flowers of Asclepias linearis ~ what a surprise & joy to see her!
