Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 08/15/2021

Number: 1

Monarch Waystation #271 reports a 2nd instar larvae found on a young Purple Milkweed in the front yard about 10:30 am as I emptied the rain gauge and checked on plants that were bent over or lying flat from the rain overnight. This milkweed [about 10-12 inches tall] was lying flat, may have been stepped on by stray pets, native animals or people, and had been down long enough for its terminal bud to begin growth upwards. When I lifted the plant back to vertical, I saw the tiny larva next to its feeding spot and took the photo. Once the photo was enlarged later, I see the larva may be dead. My plant handling or movement among nearby plants could have been the cause, or the recent days of high heat or thunderstorms.
