WENT OUT INTO A LARGE FARMER'S CLOVER FIELD WEST OF PORT HOPE, ONTARIO, TO CAPTURE MONARCHS FOR TAGGING. NUMBER SEEN ONLY AN ESTIMATE AS THERE WERE PROBABLY MANY MORE. DURING A TIMED ON-HOUR PERIOD, I CAPTURED 85 MONARCHS, ENDING WITH 124 IN TOTAL. MONARCHS APPEARED TO BE SLOWLY MOVING WEST INTO THE SOUTHWESTERLY WIND, BUT WERE CLEARLY FOCUSED ON NECTARING. ALMOST ALL WERE NEW, PRISTINE MONARCHS WITH PLUMP ABDOMENS. REGULARLY I SAW TWO MONARCHS ENTANGLE WITH ONE ANOTHER WHEN ONE CROSSED INTO THE NECTARING AREA OF THE OTHER ONE. SKITTISH AND FLIGHTY WHEN APPROACHED. A FEW OLDER, WORN MONARCHS AND A FEW MAKING PAIRS OBSERVED. WEATHER VERY HOT HERE IN SOUTHERN ONTARIO - ABOUT 83 F. ON A STRATEGIC MIGRATORY PATH ALONG NORTH SHORELINE OF LAKE ONTARIO. ABUNDANT NECTAR SOURCES NOW AVAILABLE.
