Monarch Waystation #271 sadly reports finding a hollowed out Monarch chrysalis under the utility room eave in the back yard about 9:15 am. My best guess is that it's larva had been parasitized by either wasp or fly parasitoids, and once the parasites emerged from the pupa, other insects like ants may have entered and emptied out anything left. Perhaps a bird attempted to grab it and broke it. Since watching and rearing monarchs since the late 1980s I've never found a chrysalis in this exact condition before.
