Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 09/06/2021

Number: 2

Saw (2) monarchs in the same block at Google we have visited weekly for the past couple of years. Numbers are decreasing. Previously each male seemed to guard a small area but as the numbers decrease they float up and down the block with more territory to watch for potential females. We drive slowly around the large block to be sure we aren't double counting. Then we go on the same route in reverse to confirm our numbers. Meanwhile back at home we have a dozen new eggs not yet hatched in our back yard. The yellow jackets pick them off if we don't move the pots into an outdoor cage so we have moved some for the final fall push. We test most of the butterflies for OE with a microscope. Early in the season there was very little OE but as the season went along we are seeing more.
