Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/11/2021

Number: 4

We have at least 4 rubies still with us, maybe more. It appears that we have mainly juveniles left. Our resident adult male left on the 7th; I haven't been able to pinpoint whether our resident adult female has left or not. She is much more elusive.

We have 7 feeders spread throughout different location in our yard, front and back, and a variety of perennials and annuals are still available, although some are fading. There is still a decent amount of chasing and chattering out there, but it's not nearly like it was a few weeks ago (late July through mid to late August).

One of the juvenile females guards the patio feeders and flowers and perches on top of a mock orange and squeaks. She seems to enjoy my company when I'm out there.

Another guards two feeders in the front yard and perches on or near a Zelkova tree. She is very assertive and even chases the songbirds away from her territory, particularly the chickadees, gold finches, and downy woodpeckers. She is really funny to watch.

There are others who are more elusive and feed from the feeders at the rear of our backyard. I see them there, but it's hard to make out individual details, other than the fact that they definitely are not adult males.
