Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 09/09/2021

Number: 1

While hiking Squirrel Trail at Rifle Falls State Park, I discovered a riparian area containing about a dozen A. speciosa plants with chew marks on most leaves. The photo shows the only larva I found. There were about six empty egg casings. Newly hatched larvae were probably eaten by small spiders, which I noticed on a few of the plants. I showed the photo to several interested park personnel. 9:00 AM, slight breeze, est. 72 F, clear skies but smoke haze later in the day.
