A few adult female ruby throated hummers decided to head south but a couple immature males arrived today. So we still have a group of 7. There was much more nectaring at flowers today than feeders. It's fun to watch them and see where they perch and which feeders and flowers they defend. I noted today as I changed feeders that some of the hummers would come closer to check out what was going on. I approached the feeders and stood still a few feet away 3 different times and each time 2 or 3 hummers came and perched nearby or flew in a circle close overhead. It was a neat experience.
The ruby throat in the picture is only a few feet away. This place where I sit to watch seems to be a popular spot for them to duel. Several times in the last week I almost had 2 hummers end up in my lap!
