Monarch, Captive-Reared

Date: 09/16/2021

Number: 73

We have reared 73 adults to date this year with a remaining 52 still in the chrysalis stage and an additional 8 still in the caterpillar stage for a total of 133 captives released. In addition to the 73 adults released to date. The ratio of female to male is approximately 4:1. We had 9 cats expire while in the larvae stage and three adults were hatched unable to fly due to wing impairment. We can not understand what happened to the larvae that didn’t make it. We remove the eggs and small cats to a safe incubator type environment until they are able to fend for themselves with others in the large butterfly cage environments we have reserved for later stage cats. We have not discovered an egg in our garden habitats for about three weeks. We discovered our last caterpillar on September 13. We have several types of butterfly weed growing. The preference seems to be the pink, common swamp weed. They nectar on Black Knight butterfly weed plants as well as the purple cone flowers.
