Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 09/17/2021

Number: 22

This morning I counted 22 monarch caterpillars on swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) that I planted in a rain garden in my yard 18 months ago. There are ~9 individual milkweed plants together in a grouping. The 22 caterpillars were all large and were spread around on the milkweed, along with a number of larvae of milkweed tussock moth (which I did not count). I took the photo yesterday, when 11 caterpillars were very near each other; today they have spread out. Several are soon to pupate.
