Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/16/2021

Number: 20

Roosting in mulberry, cedar, and willow trees.

[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 09/20/21]:

The roost is in the mulberry, cottonwood, and ref cedar trees along the east trails at Rowe Sanctuary. I haven’t been able to observe it every day, but we’ve been seeing 10-20 in those trees every time we pass through since the start of September. The trees provide a windbreak from the platte river to the north and the sandy prairie to the south of the trails.

Right now, we’ve got a variety of sunflowers blooming, New England aster and lance leaf aster. We’ve also got some purple loosestrife on the accretion ground of the river to the north. Overnight temps have been in the 50s-60s. Our wind speeds vary wildly, but where I saw the roost, they are shielded by trees in either side of the trail from the wind. Wind the day I saw them was a high of 15 mph from the south. Our wind is usually from the south this time of year.

I’d estimate 10-20 in a 20m span of the trail. Most were flushed from the trees as I drove through.
